If you want to see Chongqing at night from above, but would rather enjoy the view with a cocktail than stand in another crowded observation deck, SHUA · Sky Terrace Restaurant Bar (耍吧) is one of our favorite upscale options.

Located inside InterContinental Chongqing Raffles City, SHUA sits high above Chaotianmen in The Crystal, the famous sky bridge at Raffles City Chongqing.

The setting is definitely on the luxury side: panoramic views, cocktails, dinner, an outdoor glass terrace and a polished hotel atmosphere. We especially recommend it for couples, special occasions, or simply ending a busy day in Chongqing somewhere a little more relaxed.

Where Is SHUA Bar?

SHUA is located at Raffles City Chongqing in Chaotianmen, right where the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers meet.

Raffles City is one of the most recognizable buildings in Chongqing. Its horizontal sky bridge, known as The Crystal, stretches across the tops of four 250-meter towers and contains restaurants, bars and observation spaces.

SHUA is part of this high-altitude complex, so the location itself is a big part of the experience.

Why We Recommend SHUA Bar

The View Is the Real Reason to Come

There are many bars in Chongqing, but very few have this perspective.

From SHUA, you can look across the two rivers, illuminated bridges and the dense skyline around Chaotianmen.

And Chongqing is particularly impressive from above.

Because the city is built around mountains and rivers, the buildings do not sit on one flat skyline. Roads, bridges, towers and neighborhoods appear on completely different levels, which becomes even more dramatic after dark.

If this is your first time in Chongqing, seeing the city from up here helps you understand just how unusual its geography really is.

It Is More Relaxed Than an Observation Deck

This is probably our favorite thing about SHUA.

At a normal observation deck, most people take a few photos, walk around and leave.

Here, you can actually sit down.

Order a cocktail, have dinner, talk for a while and watch Chongqing gradually change from daylight into a sea of lights.

After spending the day climbing stairs and walking around the city, that slower pace can feel very welcome.

The Best Time to Visit

Go Before Sunset for the Full Experience

If your schedule allows, we recommend arriving before sunset.

During daylight, you can clearly see the two rivers, surrounding mountains and the shape of the city. Then, as it gets darker, the bridges and skyscrapers begin to light up one by one.

You essentially get two versions of Chongqing in one visit.

There is also a short period around blue hour when there is still some color in the sky but the city lights are already on. For photos, this is usually our favorite time.

After Dark for the Cyberpunk View

If your main priority is Chongqing’s famous cyberpunk night view, coming later is completely fine.

Once the sky is fully dark, Chaotianmen feels much more dramatic, especially with the illuminated towers and bridges reflected on the rivers.

Later in the evening, SHUA also becomes livelier, with music and DJ programming adding more of a nightlife atmosphere.

The Outdoor Sky Terrace

Make sure you actually step outside.

The outdoor glass terrace is one of the most memorable parts of SHUA and feels very different from simply looking through a hotel window.

From here, the height becomes much more noticeable, with the roads, rivers and buildings far below you.

It is also one of the best places inside the venue for photos.

If you are nervous about heights, you do not need to spend much time on the glass section. The indoor areas still offer excellent skyline views.

A More Upscale Side of Chongqing Nightlife

SHUA is not really a casual neighborhood bar.

It is part restaurant, part cocktail bar and part sky terrace, with a much more polished atmosphere than most nightlife venues around the city.

You can come just for drinks, but it is also possible to make it a full evening with dinner. The restaurant focuses on dishes such as grilled seafood and steak, matching the more premium setting.

What Are You Paying For?

Prices are naturally higher than at an ordinary Chongqing bar.

But we would not compare SHUA directly with a small cocktail bar downtown. A large part of what you are paying for is the overall experience:

  • The high-altitude location
  • Panoramic views over the two rivers
  • The Raffles City setting
  • The outdoor sky terrace
  • Luxury hotel service and atmosphere
  • The chance to stay and enjoy the skyline rather than simply taking photos

If your priority is cheap drinks, there are much better choices.

If your priority is the view and the setting, SHUA makes considerably more sense.

And SHUA is only one side of the city’s nightlife. From hidden cocktail bars to unusual rooftops and more local drinking spots, you can find very different experiences in our guide to the Best and Most Unique Bars in Chongqing.

Who Is SHUA Best For?

We especially recommend it for:

  • Couples looking for a romantic evening
  • Honeymoons and anniversary trips
  • Birthdays or special occasions
  • Travelers who enjoy rooftop and sky bars
  • Visitors who prefer a more comfortable way to see Chongqing at night
  • Anyone looking for a high-end night out after a full day of sightseeing

It is probably less suitable if you are mainly looking for budget drinks, local neighborhood nightlife or a very casual atmosphere.

SHUA Bar or an Observation Deck?

It really depends on what kind of experience you want.

Choose an Observation Deck If...

You mainly want to get as high as possible, take skyline photos and move on to the next attraction.

Choose SHUA If...

You want to slow down, sit with a drink and enjoy the night view for an hour or two.

SHUA feels less like checking off another tourist attraction and more like spending an evening above Chongqing.

That is why we particularly like recommending it toward the end of a trip, when you have already explored the busy streets below and want to see the city from a completely different perspective.

Want to See More of Chongqing at Night?

SHUA gives you one excellent high-altitude view, but Chongqing’s night scenery is much bigger than Chaotianmen.

Some of the city’s most impressive viewpoints are hidden on residential rooftops, mountainsides and riverside platforms, each showing a completely different layer of the skyline.

If seeing Chongqing’s futuristic side is one of the main reasons for your visit, our All the Chongqing Cyberpunk Nightviews in 3 Hours tour is designed to connect several very different viewpoints in one evening.

It is a good option if you want to see more than a single skyline view and experience how Chongqing changes from one neighborhood to another after dark.

Is SHUA Bar Worth Visiting?

For travelers who enjoy Chongqing night views, sky bars and more upscale experiences, yes.

We would not visit SHUA purely for the food or drinks. There are plenty of excellent restaurants and bars elsewhere in Chongqing.

What makes it worth considering is the combination of everything: being high above the two rivers, inside one of Chongqing’s most iconic buildings, watching the city light up while sitting comfortably with a drink.

And after a long day exploring one of China’s busiest and most chaotic cities, that can be a very good way to end the night.
