For most first-time visitors, we recommend 3 to 4 full days in Chongqing. One day covers the famous highlights, two days adds local neighborhoods and an optional cultural experience, and three days gives you time for an excursion. With four or five days, you can explore more local life and destinations beyond the city center.
At 240hoursinChina.com, we are a local travel agency with extensive experience welcoming international visitors to Chongqing. These recommendations come from planning and guiding trips for guests with different interests, schedules, and walking preferences.
Our advice is to make time for the views you have seen online, while leaving room for the neighborhoods and experiences that make the city memorable.
How Many Days in Chongqing? At a Glance
These plans assume full sightseeing days, excluding arrival and departure time.
1 Day in Chongqing: See the Famous Viral Spots
One day is enough for a selection of Chongqing’s must-see highlights, particularly if your priorities are unusual architecture and night views.
Build your day around:
Kuixinglou: Discover how a square that feels like ground level sits high above another street.
Liziba: Watch the famous monorail pass through a residential building.
Jiefangbei: Explore the central shopping district around the Liberation Monument.
Hongyadong: See its layered riverside buildings illuminated after dark.
Depending on your pace, you could add a view of Raffles City or a riverside walk. Avoid trying to visit every famous photo spot in one day: hills, changes in street level, and transfers can take longer than expected.
Keep the evening free for night views. If you only have one day, we would prioritize seeing Chongqing after dark over adding another daytime stop.

2 Days in Chongqing: Add Local Life and a Special Experience
Spend your first day on the highlights and your second exploring local neighborhoods, with time for an experience that interests you.
Explore the Mountain City Beyond Its Landmarks
Older residential areas reveal how Chongqing’s steep terrain shapes everyday life. Follow public stairways between apartment buildings, browse a neighborhood market, and stop for lunch in a small local restaurant.
These walks help explain the nickname “8D city.” A lane can lead to a staircase, which brings you onto another road several levels above where you started.
For photography, this is a chance to capture more than the familiar skyline: hillside buildings, layered streets, and everyday scenes.
Add a Show, a Themed Dinner, or Hanging Realm
For a two-day visit, we often suggest choosing one additional experience:
At Hanging Realm, the appeal goes beyond admiring the skyline. You become part of the scene, with the city’s buildings providing a striking backdrop for your photos.
Choose according to your interests rather than trying to fit everything into one day. For performances, check the language arrangements if understanding the story is important to you.
We can help arrange tickets and fit your chosen experience into the itinerary, taking its location and timing into account.
3 Days in Chongqing: Add One Day Trip
Three days gives you time for famous sights, local neighborhoods, and one excursion beyond central Chongqing.
Keep the first two days as described above, including an optional show, themed dinner, or photo experience at Hanging Realm. Reserve Day 3 for Wulong, Dazu, or the 816 Nuclear Project.
Wulong: For Natural Scenery
Choose Wulong’s Three Natural Bridges if you enjoy enormous natural rock formations, limestone cliffs, and outdoor sightseeing.
Allow approximately 2.5–3 hours each way by car, depending on your departure point and traffic. Make the bridges the focus of the day and add another stop only if time and energy allow.
If you have already spent several days in places such as Zhangjiajie and nature is not a major interest, consider one of the other excursions.
Dazu Rock Carvings: For Art and Cultural History
Choose the Dazu Rock Carvings if you are interested in sculpture, religious traditions, and Chinese history.
For a first visit, we recommend focusing on Baodingshan. Understanding the stories behind the carved scenes makes the experience much more rewarding than simply walking past them.
816 Nuclear Project: For an Unusual Historical Experience
Choose the 816 Nuclear Project, also called the 816 Nuclear Plant, if you are interested in Cold War history, engineering, or large underground spaces.
This unfinished nuclear facility offers a very different experience from temples and natural scenery. The scale of its tunnels and chambers is a major part of the appeal.
It is a strong option for travelers looking for something unusual beyond Chongqing’s familiar attractions.
Treat each destination as a separate full-day excursion. Schedule ticketed city experiences on your first or second day where possible, rather than relying on an exact return time from a day trip.
4 Days in Chongqing: Experience Old and Modern Local Life
Four days is our preferred option for a fuller first visit: one day of highlights, two days of local life, and one excursion.
The extra city day matters because local life includes much more than old streets.
Explore Guanyinqiao, or choose a mall such as The Ring or Longfor Times Paradise Walk. Browse shops, try local food, and see where residents meet friends and spend their days off.
You do not need to be interested in shopping to enjoy this side of Chongqing. Contemporary architecture, restaurants, cafés, and public spaces provide a useful contrast to older neighborhoods.
This day also gives you more flexibility for the 1949 show, Banquet of Ba Kingdom, or a cyberpunk photo experience at Hanging Realm, without squeezing it into a busy sightseeing schedule.
5 Days in Chongqing: Choose Two Excursions
Five days allows three city days and two full-day trips, giving you a broader experience of Chongqing and its surrounding destinations.
Choose the combination that best matches your interests:
Wulong + Dazu: Natural scenery and religious art.
Wulong + 816 Nuclear Project: Natural landscapes and underground engineering.
Dazu + 816 Nuclear Project: Two very different perspectives on history.
Placing a city day between the excursions breaks up the longer journeys.
Five days is not too long if you enjoy exploring beyond landmark checklists. You can experience famous views, everyday neighborhoods, contemporary city life, and two destinations outside the center.
Which Chongqing Itinerary Should You Choose?
Choose one day for the headline sights, two days for local neighborhoods and an additional experience, or three days to include one excursion.
For a fuller first visit, we recommend four days. Choose five days if two of Wulong, Dazu, and the 816 Nuclear Project particularly interest you.
At 240hoursinChina.com, we arrange private tours, custom itineraries, and tickets for experiences including the 1949 show, Banquet of Ba Kingdom, and Hanging Realm. Our local team can help you choose what is worth including and fit it into a route that suits your pace.
