1 Beishan Carvings: Song Dynasty Elite’s Legacy in Stone
Cliffside Devotion: Unlike imperial projects, these private Buddhist shrines were funded by Song Dynasty elites. Wander the trails to spot donor names like “He Zhengyan”—local clans etching their status into rock.
Miniature Mastery: Known for intricately carved statues under 50cm, particularly the Rosary-Holding Guanyin and Moonlit Water Guanyin. Delicate facial details and flowing robes showcase Song craftsmanship.
2 Baodingshan: A Monk’s Spiritual Vision
1,000-Armed Guanyin Reimagined: Monk Zhao Zhifeng’s 12th-century masterpiece features 830 gold-leafed arms forming a hypnotic sacred circle. Walk around it—the bodhisattva’s eyes appear to track visitors.
Hell’s Moral Lesson: The Netherworld Gallery uses shock tactics: drunkards boiled alive, adulterers frozen in ice. A cheerful henkeeper stands ironically below “Tongue-Ripping Hell”—her crushed eggs hint at karmic consequences.
Extreme Devotion: The Ten Trials carvings show Buddhist teacher Liu Benzun’s sacrifices—cutting off fingers, gouging eyes—in dramatic yet sacred scenes that mix horror with faith.
