Itinerary

History

In ancient times, there were many city gates in Chongqing, but this is the only one connected to the land.
The existing city gate and city wall are remnants from the Ming Dynasty. It was the starting point of the overland route from Chongqing to other places, and the ancient road led all the way to Chengdu. “Tongyuan” means leading to the distance.

Recent times

During the Republic of China period, to expand the city, the city gate was dug into a tunnel. Since then, the scope of Chongqing City was no longer limited to the area around Jiefangbei inside the city gate.
The path that pedestrians take is now beside the tunnel, which is an upward slope. The city wall was built along the cliff, giving a commanding view and fully demonstrating the characteristics of the mountain city.

On the city wall

Today, the Tongyuanmen City Wall has been transformed into a small park. Many citizens come here to drink tea and play cards, enjoying a comfortable time. A new gate tower has been built on the city gate, with a teahouse and a bookstore inside.

Tips

Tongyuanmen is well – connected. Heading east, you can reach Shancheng Lane and Jiefangbei. In other directions, it can lead you to different blocks such as Huayi Road and Pipashan mountain.
